Add both a header and page number at the top of the page in Word

I’m having a frustrating problem with Word 2007. I want to add both a header and a page number at the top of each page. When I add a header and then a page number, the header disappears. The same happens when I do it the opposite way round. How can I add both without one deleting the other?

To add both a header and page number at the top of the page in Word 2007, do the following:
    1. Add your header as normal
    2. Before clicking on ‘Close Header and Footer’, move the cursor to where you want your page number.
    3. Click on ‘Page Number’ in the top left-hand corner.
    4. Select ‘current position, and choose the style of page number.
    5. The page number will be inserted without deleting your header.
